Cuisenaire Rods

Cuisenaire Rods come in 10 different sizes and colors. Each color represents a different rod length that can be assigned a different numeric value or unit of measure. Rods range in size from 1 cm to 10 cm in length.

These are also excellent mini-building blocks. We do have a strict rule about putting them away because they are easy to lose. Our children have built castles, pyramids, and more.

Cuisenaire Rods, Wooden Introductory Set

The Cuisenaire Rods Wooden Introductory Set (in tray) comes with 74 wooden rods, plastic tray with lid, Learning About Cuisenaire Rods Activity Guide, and a poster. Each set includes 22 white, 12 red, 10 light green, 6 purple, and 4 each of the yellow, dark green, black, brown, blue and orange rods. Use with 2-3 students.

NOTE: Plastic tray is cracked on the side. It is still functional.

Zang Wild Addition Card Game

Zang Wild Addition Game

Talk about family fun! Our children from ages 6 to 13 are having fun playing and learning about multiplication. OK, call it skip counting to the younger folks! My six year old chose the tens deck first because he can count by 10's.

The game is simple and easy to learn, using one of the factor decks at a time. Being avid game players, we soon figured out that you can use the Zang game to play just about any card game--it's just a little more complicated.

Why? Because each of the factor decks contains multiples of each number up to 12. You have groups of 12 (similar to the 13 cards in each suit of a regular deck). It takes a little creativity (aka critical thinking) to adapt the rules and lots of flexibility when the game is going slowly (we had to make the rules easier to compensate for the difficulty of matching factors and sums.)

This morning the children were playing Go Fish with the Zang cards. "Do you have any of the 8 times cards?" We played a version of Flinch with selected factor cards. This is a winner! We are trying the Zang Addition Game next!
