DIVE Into Biology Instructional CD-ROM

Dive Into Biology CD-ROM Dr. David Shormann, instructor A college preparatory course. Some parts of biology involve memorization of many names and parts. Because of this, about half the lessons do not have a lecture, as Dr. Shormann wants students to spend time defining terms and memorizing facts. The Video Labs include many detailed photographs and videos of microscopic organisms, as well as descriptive earthworm, crayfish, fish, frog and pig dissections. Review by Harriet Yoder The DIVE Biology Course Work Menu has Lectures, Lab Videos (including dissections and slides,) Exams, Facts Quizzes, Grade Calculator and a Printable Workbook that contains the syllabus, lab manual, and assignments. The DIVE Biology CD-ROM shows detailed photographs with green marker appearing as Dr. Shormann speaks. The dissection I saw was the fetal pig #22. At first I wished it would have been a video, but I changed my mind when the green marker appeared and drew cutting lines (like a pointer) and details. I think the photos are probably capable of showing more detail than a video in this case. Also, the DIVE dissections include the pig in addition to the Earthworm, Crayfish, Frog and Fish. And it looks like your student doesn't need to physically dissect it order to learn it. Specimens may be hard to find.

How DIVE Science Works

Students see and hear everything the instructor is writing and saying on a whiteboard on their computer screen. It is just like being in a real classroom, except there is no teacher in the way. Students learn by working practice problems that are similar, but not identical to the practice problems in the text. Lessons are 10-20 minutes long (doesn't count the time it takes to work practice problems). If students need more practice, they can work the problems in the text in addition to the DIVE problems explained on the CD. Easily re-wind, fast-forward, and pause with the click of a mouse. Each lesson is stored as an individual file so it is easy to choose the proper lecture.

"All DIVE CDs are taught from a Christian perspective, with an emphasis on science as a tool for studying God's creation. Dr. Shormann's Christian testimony is on every CD and many lessons start with an encouraging Bible verse.
