All Through the Ages: History Through Literature Guide
By Christine Miller, Publisher: Nothing New Press
This is an excellent multi-level guide, All Through the Ages is a "compilation of over 5,600 of the best living books and great literature, arranged by chronological era, geographical region, and reading level, from many respected resources." Use All Through the Ages to find great books for your history studies if you use a literature approach, a unit study approach.
You can also use the guide to find supplementary reading with any traditional curriculum.

If you can't afford any other history resource, this is a
must have book. Why? The author, Christine Miller, compiled
a list of commonly available books which are "useful for
learning history through literature--real books--rather than
textbooks."
Unlike other lists which may have an abundance of out of
print or unavailable books, the author used a wide variety
of current home school catalogs and other sources to make
her list. She has two major listings in All Through the
Ages: Chronological History (subdivided by time period)
and Geographical History (subdivided by geographical
regions, cultures, or countries). In addition there are
three smaller lists: History of Science and Mathematics,
History of the Arts, and Great Books of Western Civilization
and the Christian Tradition.
Genre
To make it easy to look up books by genre for the study
of a specific time period or country, the listings in each
subdivision are divided by reading level and type of book:
- Resources for all ages
- Overview of the era
- Specific Events
- Biography
- Historical fiction
- Literature
- Culture
Timelines
That would make a quite wonderful book by itself, but
there are also timelines in the Chronological History
section. It is extremely easy to select books for your study
when the timeline is in the same section for easy reference.
This review may sound rather "cut and dry" because it is
rather like reviewing a very good dictionary. Until you use
it, it is hard to see the difference. Christine
Miller's All Through the Ages is a history through
literature guide with a "difference." It will inspire your
studies and help your homeschool adventure to be far more
interesting. I highly recommend it |
