Homeschool High School

For more curriculum choices, see the listings by subject or publisher.

The high school section includes informational books and electives for the secondary student.

As more homeschoolers graduate and enter the job market or the higher educational system, it is becoming easier for others to be accepted.  Some colleges and universities offer special scholarships to homeschool graduates.  You can teach high school at home!

We suggest that you keep good records, prepare a “professional” transcript (using a word processing program and a really good printer), and help your student find his gifting.

How to Study

How to Study 9781932971347
How to Study: A Practical Guide from a Christian Perspective

By Edward J. Shewan, Christian Liberty Press

As the title says, How to Study is a very practical guide with a Christian perspective.

It is encouraging and set up in a logical sequence that will help your student to learn good study skills. I went through our copy and marked "To Do" items for our students to accomplish as they read the book.

You could also use this book as a read-aloud study with multiple children assigning the To Do items as you read a chapter.

The Units include:

  • Let's Get Started
  • Improving Your Reading Aptitude
  • Improving Your Writing Skills
  • Improving Your Composition Skills
  • Improving Your Research Skills
  • Improving Your Study Habits
  • Improving Your Test Taking
  • Improving Your Live By Reading

There is a lot of good information packed into this little book. It's now a Lamp Post Favorite!

SAT & College Preparation Course for the Christian Student

We highly recommend this book for your high school students if they plan to attend college.

SAT & College Preparation Course for the Christian Student 9780547333199
SAT & College Preparation Course for the Christian Student 2011

By James P. Stobaugh, Master Books

Intended for the college-bound Christian student, the lessons in the SAT and College Preparation Course for the Christian Student include:

  • A Comprehensive Reading Program
  • Intentional Vocabulary Development
  • Test-Taking Strategies
  • Intentional Faith Building
  • Essay Writing

There are 150 lessons for completion in one to three years, depending on which grade you start the course. Lessons can be assigned to the student. We have three high school students this year and enjoy doing the Scripture Reading and Devotion together. We will also do any of the shorter exercises in the lesson that lend themselves to the small group family setting. For example, some of the critical thinking and math exercises work well.

The SAT & College Preparation Course for the Christian Student is literature-based with a list of suggested books for grades 9-11. Reading great literature helps improve one's vocabulary and critical reading skills.

Reproducible forms for your own use include a Reading Journal page to be completed for each book your student reads and a Thirty-Minute Prayer Devotional Journal Page with excellent prompts and questions.

My first thought on seeing this book was that it looked intimidating and too hard. Quite the reverse has proven to be true as we put it to use. The format is easy to follow. When high school boys remind you to do these scriptures and devotions, you know they are interesting.

Depending on how you schedule and implement the lessons, you could give course credit as a college prep course or include it as part of your language arts curriculum.

Dr. James P. Stobaugh "was a Merrill Fellow at Harvard University with holds degrees from Vanderbilt and Rutgers Universities, and Princeton and Gordon-Conwell seminaries. An experienced teacher, he is a recognized leader in homeschooling and college/SAT preparation. He has published several books for students and teachers. He and his wife, Karen, have homeschooled their four children since 1985." From the back cover of the book.

A Little About the SAT and ACT

You can register online or ask them to mail forms.

You may want to check out calculators--one can use SAT approved calculators on the test.  Most of them show on the labels which are SAT approved.

You can use the info on the PSAT scores to focus on certain areas to help raise scores.

Sometimes if the SAT scores are just a little higher, you can qualify for better scholarships.  It is not hard to raise them around 50-100 points if you take time to look at the test scores and see which areas could be improved.

  •  ACT Assessment Homepage   I also recommend that college bound students also take the ACT. For scholarship/admission purposes if one does significantly better on the ACT and the college accepts it, you can possibly access more scholarship funds.  Some homeschoolers do better on one or the other.
