Reading Homeschool Curriculum Index
To be able to read is a blessing! One of the greatest joys of teaching your children is watching them learn to read. Another is to pass along
the love of reading. If one is taught to read but hates to read, how can we expect him to want to read the Bible?
How do we give our children this gift? Remember that “mercy triumphs over judgment” (James 2:13) and “love them, love them” as Maria said to
the Captain in The Sound of Music!
Ease of use, enjoyability, and effectiveness are several of the factors we look for in the reading programs we offer.
There are "bazillions" of reading programs out there. We've tried several in our family and looked at many more.

Color Phonics 5 CD-ROM Set with Teacher BookPublisher: Alpha Omega Publications
The Color Phonics computer program is very useful for any parent with a child who needs to learn to read.
The first level of Color Phonics teaches sound differentiation and how to make the sounds (through cleverly animated pictures of the mouth from a side view.) If the child can hear the differences in similar sounds, it will be easier for the child to learn to read. For those with special needs, it is suitable for the elementary age.
The levels increase in difficulty, teaching various new sounds with each lesson. There is an interesting exercise tucked in between lessons for teaching blending.
Our three boys enjoyed watching Revver trek his way across the screen when they answer correctly. I used this in conjunction with Explode the Code, and I am pleased with the results.
I consider this a great buy for the amount of time my children have spent with the program! The teacher center keeps track of each child's progress and allows you to set time limits, to set the requirements to pass each lesson, and to skip lessons, if needed.
This is the original 1996 program. It has not been revised, but it is a good sound program that doesn't need to be improved. Color Phonics can be used alone or to supplement any reading program.
It is now out of print. We have a limited number of copies.
Color Phonics includes 5 CDs and a 130-page Teacher's Guide with reference cards.

Phonogram CardsBy Lakemere Publishing
The Phonogram Cards are very helpful when you are teaching a child to read with phonics—particularly if you did not learn to read with phonics.
We used these with our children and highly recommend them. They can supplement any phonics based reading program.
The beauty of using the cards is that the child sees the phonogram side with the letters printed in a large font while you are looking at the teacher's side with the instructions. Your side shows the sound(s) for the phonogram, a key word so you will know how it sounds, and exactly what to say to explain it to your student.
There are 72 basic phonograms. On the cards for the 26 phonograms that are letters of the alphabet, there are scripted instructions for writing each letter. This makes teaching handwriting much easier.
We laminated our set and used a paper cutter to cut them apart. A quart size freezer zip lock bag is a great place to keep them. Our grandchildren are using our original set.
Sturdy cardstock printed on 18 pages with four cards to a page. |

Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy LessonsBy Siegfried Engelmann
Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons is a complete, step-by-step program that shows parents simply and clearly how to teach their children to read.
Twenty minutes a day is all you need, and within 100 teaching days you child will be reading on a solid second-grade reading level. It's a sensible, easy-to-follow, and enjoyable way to help your child gain the essential skills of reading. Everything you need is her for you and your child to learn together. The lessons are fully illustrated and color-coded for clarity and give your child the basic and more advanced skills needed to become a good reader.
Based on SRA's DISTAR reading program, Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons is appropriate for "preschool children (bright three-and-a-half-year-olds, average four- and five-year-olds)." It is also "appropriate for children who have been in school but who have not learned to read. The program is not recommended for 'poor readers' who have been taught how to read but who make frequent mistakes."
Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons is particularly useful if your child is having trouble blending sounds. The way it teaches this technique is simple and helpful.
It is non-consumable. In addition to the book, you will need some paper or a chalkboard.
The instructions are detailed--scripted--on each lesson page. |

Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Readingby Jessie Wise and Sara Buffington
It uses a "simple, scripted format that guides parents and children through each lesson, from beginning vowel sounds through words on a fourth-grade level." It's the "only book you'll need to teach your child to read!"
With this book, you can jump in and start teaching reading to your child. The authors have included information on teaching phonics in the back of the book. It's not that hard, and with this book, you can do it.
The only additional materials you'll need with the Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading are a magnetic board with alphabet tiles, index cards, and the usual school supplies: yarn, scissors, pens, pencils, drawing supplies, yarn, magnets, paperclips, and one dowel for one special activity. The Reading LessonMichael Levin and Charan Langton
The Reading Lesson is one of the reading choices for the Little Hearts for His Glory curriculum. That's how I learned about it. I like this one because it is plain and simple. Some
phonics programs get so complicated, it's like learning another language just to understand them. It is also visually pleasing.
My daughter is using the Reading Lesson to teach her 4 year-old to read. They think it is great. It works and is easy for her to use with her daughter. |
