Home School Reading Curriculum Index
To be able to read is a blessing! One of the greatest joys of teaching your children is watching them learn to read. Another is to pass along
the love of reading. If one is taught to read but hates to read, how can we expect him to want to read the Bible?
How do we give our children this gift? Remember that “mercy triumphs over judgment” (James 2:13) and “love them, love them” as Maria said to
the Captain in The Sound of Music!
Ease of use, enjoyability, and effectiveness are several of the factors we look for in the reading programs we offer.
There are "bazillions" of reading programs out there. We've tried several in our family and looked at many more.
The homeschool readers, books and reading courses we offer here are homeschool
friendly with proven track records among homeschool families who have taught
their children to read.

The Reading LessonMichael Levin and Charan Langton
The Reading Lesson is one of the reading choices for the Little Hearts for His Glory curriculum. That's how I learned about it. I like this one because it is plain and simple. Some
phonics programs get so complicated, it's like learning another language just to understand them. It is also visually pleasing.
My daughter is using the Reading Lesson to teach her 4 year-old to read. They think it is great. It works and is easy for her to use with her daughter. |

Classical Phonics A Child's Guide to Word MasteryBy Cheryl Lowe, Publisher: Memoria Press
Based on Florence Akin's 1913 classic, Word Mastery, Classical Phonics is a methodical
teaching of phonics. It has been redesigned and reorganized for better use today while keeping the original concepts for teaching.
Instructions for the teacher are shown at the bottom of each page as needed. They used a simple larger size font for the print, and the pictures are well drawn and simple.
Before you use this book, you need to read the "Suggestions to Teachers" in the back of the book.
If you are wondering where to start with teaching phonics, this book is a good choice.
It is well written and economically priced. Classical Phonics is effective and simple, proving that teaching reading does not have to be complicated. |

Phonogram CardsBy Lakemere Publishing
The Phonogram Cards are very helpful when you are teaching a child to read with phonics—particularly if you did not learn to read with phonics.
We used these with our children and highly recommend them. They can supplement any phonics based reading program.
The beauty of using the cards is that the child sees the phonogram side with the letters printed in a large font while you are looking at the teacher's side with the instructions. Your side shows the sound(s) for the phonogram, a key word so you will know how it sounds, and exactly what to say to explain it to your student.
There are 72 basic phonograms. On the cards for the 26 phonograms that are letters of the alphabet, there are scripted instructions for writing each letter. This makes teaching handwriting much easier.
We laminated our set and used a paper cutter to cut them apart. A quart size freezer zip lock bag is a great place to keep them. Our grandchildren are using our original set.
Sturdy cardstock printed on 18 pages with four cards to a page. |

The lessons are fully illustrated and color-coded for clarity and give your child the basic and more advanced skills needed to become a good reader.
