Modern Curriculum Press Phonics Practice Readers
Overview of the Series
Use these phonetically
controlled stories to help students thoroughly learn, practice, and apply
phonics-- independently and with growing confidence. These are the Phonics Practice Readers
recommended in The Well Trained Mind
by Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer. The copyrights of the readers and the
workbooks are in the mid-1980s. This popular series has been tried and tested.
Many of our customers who read them as a child or taught them with their
children are reading them again with their children and grandchildren!
Level Comparison
Each level of the series practices similar phonics shills
with different stories. For example, the Set 1 level covers short vowels
in series A, B, and C. Set 2 level covers long vowel sounds; Set 3 level
covers blends; and set 4 level covers digraphs. The
Phonics Practice
Reader Series C is a larger size with larger pictures while Phonics Practice
Reader Series A and B are the same size.
A set of worksheets, called Skill Masters, are
available for every set. One other difference is that Series A has two extra
sets of readers (one short vowels and one long vowels set), making six sets of
readers.
Reproducible blackline Skill Masters are available for each
reader in the Phonics Practice Readers sets. Each Skill Master has three
different worksheets for every reader in a set, making thirty worksheets in each
workbook. There is an award certificate to give a student upon completion of the
readers and skill masters in a set. The answers are found on reduced pages in
the front of each skill master book.
Across the series the Skill Masters vary in focus depending on
the level. They can focus on story comprehension, writing sentences, decoding
practice and/or other skills. The blackline masters have nice pen and ink type
drawings that are conservatively done.
