Keeping
it simple is the way New American Cursive®
teaches penmanship. From Memoria Press, this new cursive
handwriting curriculum is aimed at students in first grade. Yes,
you can teach cursive handwriting first. The author, Iris
Hatfield, believes that it is harder for students to learn
cursive if they learn printing first. It makes sense when you
teach a simple but elegant cursive style.
New American Cursive is easy-to use. Though a little
pricey for a handwriting text, all the instructions are included. In the
homeschooling setting, you only need to do handwriting instruction one
year or until it is learned. Why? With one-on-one instruction, your
student will probably learn it the first time through. After that, you
will be there to correct any handwriting mistakes as they occur. You
provide the review and the reinforcement. That makes this program a
great buy!
If you have a student who doesn't take to handwriting
naturally, then you can always use another handwriting program after
this course is completed. It is perfectly acceptable to continue to
teach a skill until it is properly learned.
Features of the New American Cursive Penmanship
Program include:
A simplified (though lovely) alphabet where unnecessary strokes
are eliminated.
Multi-sensory teaching methods are used in the book.
Clear arrows and starting dots
Flexible method allows for individuality of the child
Printed in the "landscape view" ((about 11" wide and 8 1/2"
high) and bound at the top for ease of use by left or right-handed
students.
Handy Hint: You might want to remove page 106
and have it laminated! Your student can use it to trace the letters with
a grease pen or erasable marker.
