Mini-Review by Harriet Yoder There are two
great reasons to use Portland Italic. First, I
like the basic italic handwriting as a pre-cursive handwriting for those
who plan to teach a traditional cursive. The pre-cursive handwriting
makes the transition easier. In addition, the cursive italic is a nice
handwriting for students who would be adult
"printers". We all know folks who always print! The second reason is
that it is easier to learn for students who have difficulty with handwriting.

For grades K to 6, you'll need
Getty-Dubay Italic Handwriting.
When your older student is having difficulty with handwriting, I recommend Write Now. For the person who wants to learn italic calligraphy, there is Italic
Letters Calligraphy and Handwriting, a comprehensive guide to Italic
Calligraphy.

This is the first of seven books in the Getty-Dubay Italic
Handwriting series. Book A Kindergarten provides instruction in italic handwriting and is
designed for the beginning student of handwriting and is recommended for
preschool, kindergarten, and/or early first grade.
Each of the twenty-six lowercase letters and the twenty-six
capitals are introduced with one letter per page. Letters are arranged in the
order of lowercase families, which group letters with similar strokes together
and progress from simple to more complex forms.
Each page in Italic Handwriting Book A is designed for the student to trace the models, write
letters at the given dots and in the blank spaces, and to write a "best" letter
in the empty box on each alphabet page.
The lines are quite large in this book so if your child tends to
write smaller, you might want to start with Book B. |

By Getty and Dubay
In the Getty-Dubay Portland Italic Handwriting series, there is
only one Instruction Manual. It is used for each level from A to G and
devotes a few pages to each book.
The Instructor's Manual for the Italic Handwriting series contains helpful hints on teaching the
italic and covers Assessment, Implementation, Activities and Supplements. In the
back of the book, there is a very useful section of blank pages with ruled lines
depicting examples of the line widths used throughout the series.
The Italic Handwriting Instructor's Manual is a helpful tool for homeschoolers
seeking a guide on teaching the program to their children, but the program can
