GeoDeo Journey
Into Africa Review
Review by Harriet Yoder
Finally there's a delightful curriculum about Africa that does
it justice--instead of lightly touching on the continent. Ann M. Jansen's
GeoDeo Journey Into Africa curriculum is a multi-level unit study with a
Christian perspective that is reasonably priced and has professional quality
components.
The
Journey Into
Africa Resource Book is the "textbook" for the course, but it's very
different from your typical textbook. Visually, it's one of the best
curriculum books I've seen with its easy to follow layout, beautiful pictures
and maps, interesting information boxes, etc. It is written in a more
conversational appealing style that makes me want to keep on reading! Every time I pick it up, the information and pictures beckon me to read some
more about Africa. I appreciate the missions perspective--personal stories
about "how the lives of many Africans have been changed through the loving
hearts of missionaries."
The Journey Into Africa Resource Book can also be used to supplement any
study of Africa. Subjects covered in the resource book include: history, geography, world religions, animals, cooking and art.
From there you can choose the
Journey Into Africa
Self-Guided Lesson Plans for independent workers in grades 7 and up or the
Journey Into Africa
Instructors Manual with teacher/parent-led lesson plans for grades 2-8.
Recently the
Reproducible Student Worksheets were removed from the Instructor's Manual
and are now sold separately. There are two sets with one for Grades 2 to 5 and
another for Grades 5 to 8. If you want to streamline the study you can use the
student worksheets alone with the Journey Into Africa Resource Book.
Additional components (How to Draw and Color Book,
Journey Into Africa
Coloring and Fun Pages,
Africa Songs
CD, Rhythms CD, and
Review Flash Cards) are
also available. They are listed as necessary for the instructor-led
lessons and optional for the self-guided lessons.
If you want to study Africa with your children, I recommend
using GeoDeo Journey Into Africa. It is suitable for homeschool and
the Christian school use and it's impressive.
