Grade Level Spelling Curriculum

These spelling programs use the traditional workbook approach that offers a list of words to study for the week, exercises, and a weekly test.

• BJUP Spelling for Grades 1 to 6   The BJUP spelling program follows phonics rules, uses word groups, and stresses dictionary skills.
• Building Spelling Skills   Building Spelling Skills from Christian Liberty Press was chosen by Cathy Duffy as on of her "100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum" in the language arts: spelling and vocabulary category. Grades 1 to 8
• Horizons Spelling and Vocabulary   The colorful format makes learning new words and developing vocabulary and spelling skills fun for grades 1, 2, and 3.
• Modern Curriculum Press Spelling Workout 1994 Edition   A consumable spelling program for grades 1-8 that is well received among homeschoolers. This one has the sports theme. Grades 1 to 8
• Modern Curriculum Press Spelling Workout 2002  MCP's 2002 version of the Spelling Workout curriculum. Grades 1 to 8
• A Reason for Spelling   Each lesson begins with a theme story that develops important principles found in the week's scripture verse. Grades 1-6
• Spelling Power Series By Curriculum Associates  This methodical spelling program utilizes about 1,800 of the most commonly used words in the English language for grades 1-8. Consumable workbooks.

Multi-level Spelling Curriculum

These spelling programs use different approaches to spelling.

• AVKO Sequential Spelling  teaches spelling patterns and the way words build.
• Apples Daily Spelling Drills for Secondary Students   Written by Susan Kemmerer, a veteran homeschool mom, Apples is for grades 5-12.
• Natural Speller  Lists rules, uses Latin and Greek roots, gives teaching strategies, organized word lists, and activities from Design a Study.
• Sound Spelling  Contains lists of sounds matched to various letter combinations. From these lists, a student learns to spell the words that give him or her trouble.
• Spelling Power By Beverly Gordon-Adams  This multilevel text is the Spelling Power that you hear about for homeschoolers. The multi-sensory approach focuses on learning the words you need to learn--as opposed to studying a spelling list each week whether you know them or not.
